A Unique Training Course
SMaRT Women™ – at the wheel and in control, aims to empower women and give them the skills to undertake a range of basic safety checks and routine car maintenance tasks. The workshop is run ‘by women for women’ and covers three key areas: legal and technical information and one to one practical training on your own car.
- Find out how to do basic tasks yourself rather than pay someone else or, if you choose to use a garage, have the knowledge to make sure you get a fair deal.
- Understand the simple steps you need to follow in order to keep your car safe for you and your passengers.
- Find out how to save on fuel and make your car journeys more efficient – you’ll reduce your carbon footprint as well as your fuel bill.
Who Is the Course Aimed At?
- Private individuals.
- Newly qualified drivers.
- Employers fulfilling legal requirements which ensure that all employees have a thorough understanding of their legal and health and safety obligations.
- Garages and other motor industry organisations wanting to develop new streams of income and/or supplement the package of benefits they offer their customers.
- Training providers.
Some Facts & Figures

The research also revealed that 65% of motorists could not recognize any of the 7 most common warning lights on the dashboard.

Supporters & Endorsements
“I endorse SMaRT Women™ and the garage. I was impressed by SMaRT Women™ and felt it highlights FST’s commitment to improving public perception of the industry.” Sarah Sillars OBE, CEO of Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies (Semta)
“FOXY recognises and supports the excellent work that FST is doing to provide real jobs and training opportunities for disadvantaged people wanting to get back into work. I am delighted to welcome their four SMaRT Garage Services to our FOXY Lady Approved Female Friendly garage network and to endorse their new SMaRT Women™ training programme. We will be promoting SMaRT Women™ in the future to empower local FOXY Lady Drivers to take care of their own cars and personal safety in between garage visits.” Steph Savill, MD of FOXY Lady Drivers Club
“SMaRT Women™ is a great idea – I have already signed up for the first session.” Stella English, winner of the BBC’s The Apprentice 2010
“SMaRT Garage Services is a fantastic concept and SMaRT Women™ is a really welcome extension of its services, training women in an area traditionally associated with men. That empowers women, equipping them with life skills and the knowledge to help ensure they get a fair deal when they take their car to a garage.” Rt Hon Hazel Blears MP for Salford and Eccles
“I would absolutely recommend the SMaRT Women™ course to colleagues. I knew a little bit about car maintenance before I did the course but it’s raised my awareness that I need to keep a check on things myself. I think it also could be extended to men, young people and older drivers as it’s hugely beneficial.” Emma Gennard, Mental Health Commissioning, Clincal Commissionning Group
“I would certainly recommend SMaRT Women™. I think it would also benefit employers who have employees who are drivers because it would help employees understand their legal requirements and make the company fleet a lot safer. SMaRT Women™ sets an example to the independent garage sector.”
Sally-Anne Hodder, Head of HR & Business Support, Institute of Motor Industry
“I would thoroughly endorse SMaRT Women™. It gives you an understanding of the machine you are operating, how to save some money and how to prolong the life of your car. SMaRT Women™ is an extremely valuable short course run by a garage which is welcoming and un-intimidating to women drivers.” Helen Milward, Campaigns Manager, Serco Internal
“It’s important to have a basic knowledge of car maintenance and safety. All too often I’ve felt out of my comfort zone when something simple has gone wrong with my car. A well maintained vehicle also helps keep costs down. SMaRT Women™ is an excellent initiative that I am sure will help many women in the borough.” Councillor Teresa O’Neill, Leader of the London Borough of Bexley
“I’m amazed how many people don’t know what they need to do in terms of regular car maintenance. Drivers think their annual service is enough and that they don’t need to do any more checks in between services. SMaRT Women™ is such a good idea.” Councillor Val Clark, London Borough of Bexley
“SMaRT Women™ taught me the very basics of car maintenance, general health and safety, legal requirements and I didn’t know about the fines if you don’t comply. If I open the bonnet it doesn’t scare me anymore. It’s a compact short course which you can do within an hour.” Renu Ghale, Grants Manager, The ACT Foundation
“Garages tend to be very male dominated and sometimes you think the mechanics think ‘here comes a woman!’ Having done the SMaRT Women™ course I feel confident about going into a garage and asking the guys, have you done this or looked at this?” Councillor Linda Bailey, Cabinet member for Economic Development and Regeneration, London Borough of Bexley
“I would recommend SMaRT Women™ to all my friends. I think it would also be good for older drivers and new drivers and not just women. Young drivers in particular would benefit from doing a SMaRT course to learn the basics before they start their driving lessons.” Janine Rolls, Martin Vitera Ltd
“SMaRT Women™ is a great new initiative for local women. It tells you all you need to know about car maintenance and safety and also gives you the confidence to carry out routine practical tasks yourself. I would recommend it to women in the borough.” Councillor Denise Hyland, Royal Borough of Greenwich
“It was a pleasure to host the SMaRT Women™, launch in Woolwich. It taught me the basics of motor vehicle maintenance and I now feel equipped to walk into any garage and talk to a mechanic with confidence. I highly recommend this course.” Lydia Frempong, Channel 4 Lifecoach & Spokeswoman for International Woman’s Day @CoachLyds
